Podcast Link Building: Do Guests Get a Backlink? We Checked 30 Episodes
We checked 30 guest episode pages from 10 marketing podcasts. 18 linked the guest. Here is how to tell which shows will, before you pitch.

Podcast link building works when the show publishes its own episode page with notes that link to you. The Apple Podcasts or Spotify listing does not count, so the link depends on the show's website, not the interview. We checked 30 guest episode pages from 10 marketing and SEO podcasts to see how often the guest actually gets a link, and what kind. Then we read 12 ranking guides on podcast backlinks to see what they promise. Below are the results, a five-step process and a pitch you can copy.
The short version#
- 18 of 30 episode pages linked to the guest's own site or company. Six linked only to social profiles, and six had no guest link at all.
- Every one of the 56 guest links we found was a normal, followed link. None carried rel="nofollow", "sponsored" or "ugc".
- The show decides, not the episode. Four shows linked all three guests. Two linked none: one used LinkedIn only, the other posts full transcripts with no guest link.
- The guides overpromise. Half of the 12 say show notes will usually link to you, and none gives a figure for how often they do. Only one says to check that the episode page is indexed.
What we checked on 30 podcast episode pages#
We took the three most recent guest episodes from each of 10 podcasts that host episode pages on their own domain: Social Media Marketing Podcast, Duct Tape Marketing, Niche Pursuits, Marketing Speak, Marketing Over Coffee, EDGE of the Web, Perpetual Traffic, Online Marketing Made Easy, Voices of Search and Everyone Hates Marketers. We fetched each page on October 26, 2026, and read the rel attribute on every link in the show notes. A guest link means a link to the guest's own or company domain. LinkedIn and X profiles are counted separately.
The pattern is by show, not by guest. Social Media Examiner, Duct Tape Marketing, Niche Pursuits and Marketing Speak linked every guest, often more than once. Marketing Speak's page for Nathan Gotch links his site and his software company 11 times in total. Voices of Search linked all three guests to LinkedIn and nothing else. Everyone Hates Marketers publishes long transcripts, over 12,000 words each, with no guest link anywhere.
Three more things stood out:
- No sitewide nofollow. None of the 10 sites nofollows all outbound links. Where they use nofollow, it is on the Apple, Spotify and audio download buttons, not on guests.
- No noindex. All 30 pages were indexable and had a canonical pointing to themselves.
- Transcripts do not predict links. Twelve pages carried full transcripts. Duct Tape and Marketing Speak paired them with guest links; Everyone Hates Marketers and two of three Perpetual Traffic pages did not.
This is a small, hand-picked sample, so read the 60% as a rough guide, not a rate for the whole medium. One Niche Pursuits guest is counted as linked even though both of her links go to her Substack and Gumroad pages.
Do Apple Podcasts and Spotify give you a backlink?#
No, not in any way you can count on. We saved three Apple Podcasts episode pages for shows in our sample. In the HTML the server sends, the descriptions are plain text: the guest's URLs appear as words, with no link tag. One Apple description held no guest URL at all, only a pointer to the show's own notes page.
That matches what the better guides say. Editorial.Link writes that Spotify and Apple Podcasts do not allow working links, so "even if the link is included in the show notes, it doesn't pump any juice." Rephonic says directory links are nofollow. Two guides in our set say the opposite and count Apple and Spotify as link sources.
The practical rule is simple. Before you pitch, find the show's own website. If episodes only live on Apple, Spotify and YouTube, as with the Authority Hacker podcast when we checked, there is no episode page to link from. Your appearance may still be worth doing for the audience, but it is not link building.
What 12 podcast link building guides promise#
We read 12 guides that rank for podcast link building, guest podcasting for SEO and podcast backlinks, including Ahrefs, Search Engine Journal, Rephonic, Editorial.Link, LSEO and Duct Tape Marketing. We tallied what each one tells you to expect.
Six of the 12 say show notes will link to you, in words like "almost certainly" or "every appearance equates to a new, high-quality backlink." None gives a share. In our sample the answer was 18 of 30, and it depended almost entirely on the show.
Eight of the 12 publishers sell a link building or podcast booking service or tool. The guides contain 23 numeric claims, and only four cite an outside source. One often-repeated figure is "4.2 million active podcasts." Podcast Index, which counts open RSS feeds, lists about 4.74 million feeds in total, but only about 467,000 published an episode in the last 90 days. That is under one in ten. Many shows you find in a directory are no longer making episodes, and an old episode page is less likely to be updated with your link.
How to get backlinks from podcasts in five steps#
- Vet the show's website first. Open three recent guest episode pages. Count how many link the guest's own domain, and check the rel attribute in the page source. If the answer is zero of three, the show is an audience play, not a link.
- Check the episode page is indexed. Search Google for the exact URL of a past episode, or check it in a tool you trust. Our backlink indexing post explains why a link on a page Google has not indexed does nothing for you.
- Pitch one specific episode idea. Name a past episode you heard, the angle you would add and why their listeners care. The link building outreach basics apply: short, specific, and about them.
- Send the show-notes kit before you record. One line of bio, the exact URL you want linked and the page it should point to, plus two or three resources you mention on air. Hosts link what is easy to copy.
- Verify after the episode goes live. Check the link is there, followed, and on an indexed page. If it is missing, ask once, politely. LSEO notes that "many missing links are not intentional."
Finding shows that link guests is the slow part. GenLink's backlink agent finds relevant sites, writes each pitch around why you fit, and sends it from your own mailbox, so every reply stays in your inbox.
A podcast guest pitch you can copy#
Subject: Guest idea for [Show]: [specific angle]
Hi [Host],
I listened to your episode with [past guest] on [topic]. The point about [detail] matched what we see at [company].
I'd like to come on and talk about [angle], with three things your listeners can use the same week:
1. [takeaway one]
2. [takeaway two]
3. [takeaway three]
I've done [credential, e.g. "run this for 40 client sites"]. I can send a one-line bio, a headshot and the links for the show notes before we record.
Would [month] work?
[Name]
[Site]
Fill every bracket before you send. A pitch that names a real past episode and a real takeaway is the whole reason it gets read. Our link building email templates post has follow-up wording.
Is podcast link building white hat?#
Being interviewed and getting linked in the notes is an editorial link, the same as being quoted in an article. It changes when money moves. Some shows charge for guest spots or sell "sponsored episodes." Google's spam policies list "exchanging money for links, or posts that contain links" as link spam, and say paid links are fine "as long as they are qualified with a rel="nofollow" or rel="sponsored" attribute value." Google's guidance on outbound links says paid placements should use the sponsored value.
So if you pay for the spot, expect the link to be sponsored, and treat it as advertising. If a show sells a paid spot and promises a followed link, that is buying links. Our buying backlinks post covers the risk.
Podcasts vs guest posts, digital PR and HARO#
Podcast guesting sits next to the other earned-link tactics. The link usually lands on one episode page and costs an hour of your time rather than a written article. A guest post gives you control of the anchor text and context but takes longer to write. Digital PR and HARO-style sourcing can win links from bigger sites but with less certainty. Podcasts have one edge the others lack: the host has already decided to talk about you for a full episode, so asking for a link in the notes is a small extra ask.
All four run on the same workflow: find the right sites, check they link out, pitch something specific, and track what lands. The full process is in our link building guide.
Frequently asked questions#
Do podcasts give backlinks? Some do. In our sample of 30 guest episode pages from 10 marketing podcasts, 18 linked the guest's own site or company. The link comes from the show's own episode page, so check that the show publishes one.
Are podcast backlinks dofollow? On the show's own website they usually are. All 56 guest links we found were followed, with no nofollow, sponsored or ugc value. On the Apple Podcasts pages we checked, guest URLs were plain text, and guides report directory links as nofollow or absent, so they do not count.
How do I find podcasts that link to guests? Search Google or a podcast directory such as Listen Notes or Apple Podcasts for shows in your niche, then open three recent guest episode pages on the show's own site. If none link the guest's domain, move on.
How many podcast backlinks can I get? One per appearance, sometimes a few on the same page. Treat each as one referring domain. Podcast Index lists about 467,000 shows that published in the last 90 days, so the pool of active shows is smaller than directory totals suggest.
Should I pay to be a podcast guest? Only as advertising. Google's spam policies count paying for links as link spam unless the link is marked sponsored or nofollow.
Do podcast transcripts help SEO? They help the show's page rank for what you said, but they do not guarantee you a link. In our sample, one show published 12,000-word transcripts with no guest link at all.
Run the outreach without the spreadsheet. GenLink's backlink agent prospects, pitches and follows up from your own domain. You can start on the free plan.
