Link Building Tools: What Each Job Costs, From Price Lists
Most best-tools lists rank every tool on one ladder. We tallied nine of them, read the vendors' price lists, and sorted the tools by the job they actually do.

Link building tools do four jobs: find sites worth a link, find the right person's email, send and follow up on the pitch, and check that the link stays live. The cheapest paid tool for each job costs $49 to $50 a month, and the link checker can be free. Most "best link building tools" lists rank all four jobs on one ladder, so it is easy to pay for three tools that do the same thing and none that does the next step.
We read nine of the lists that rank for the keyword in October 2026, counted which tools they name and who publishes them, then went to each vendor's pricing page and wrote down only the prices they publish. Here is what each job costs, and where one tool covers two.
The four jobs a link building tool does#
Every link you earn goes through the same four steps. A tool is only worth paying for if it does one of them better than what you already have.
- Find prospects. Backlink databases such as Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz and Majestic show which sites link to your competitors and which pages attract links. This is link building prospecting, and it is where most of the money goes.
- Find contacts. Email finders such as Hunter turn a site into a named person and a verified address.
- Send and follow up. Outreach tools such as BuzzStream and Pitchbox send the pitch, schedule follow-ups and track replies. The pitch itself is covered in our link building outreach guide.
- Monitor. A link checker confirms the link went live and tells you if it disappears or turns nofollow. Google's own Links report in Search Console is free.
What nine best-tools lists recommend#
We read nine lists: Ahrefs, Backlinko, Semrush, Hunter, Rank Math, Search Engine Journal, Influencer Marketing Hub, Digital Olympus and Sure Oak. Between them they fill about 100 list slots with more than 40 different tools. We counted a tool once per list if it had its own entry.
Three things stand out.
- No tool made every list. Ahrefs and Hunter each appear on 8 of 9. BuzzStream appears on 6. Everything else appears on 5 or fewer, so there is no agreed top ten.
- Five of the nine lists are written by a tool vendor, and all five put their own product first. Ahrefs ranks Ahrefs first, Hunter ranks Hunter first, Rank Math ranks its own SEO plugin first, and Semrush's list opens with its Backlink Gap tool and gives three of its seven slots to Semrush tools. Backlinko's list opens with Semrush; Backlinko's footer says it "is owned by Semrush." That doesn't make the picks wrong, but read slot one as an ad.
- The same tool gets three different prices. Backlinko lists Respona at "$99-$399 per month" and Rank Math says it "starts at $198/month." Respona's own pricing page now sells placements instead, at $100 to $500 a placement. Check the vendor's page before you budget from a list.
The lists also rarely separate the jobs. A database, an email finder and an outreach inbox sit side by side in one ranking, though you would never choose between them. Search Engine Journal and Sure Oak are the exceptions: both group tools by what they do, and Rank Math adds a table of which tool does which job.
What each job costs, from price lists#
We read each vendor's pricing page on 18 and 20 October 2026 and recorded the entry price of its cheapest paid plan, billed monthly. Annual billing is 17% to 30% cheaper at most of them.
- Find prospects: Moz has a $49 a month plan "designed specifically for individuals managing a single website"; its Standard plan is $99. Majestic Lite is $49.99. Ahrefs Lite is $129 and Semrush's SEO plan is $139.
- Find contacts: Hunter Starter is $49 for 2,000 credits a month. Its free plan gives 50 credits.
- Send and follow up: BuzzStream Starter is $49 for one user, 500 contacts and 30 prospecting searches. Pitchbox Pro is $300.
- Monitor: Search Console's Links report costs nothing. Pitchbox's plans list link monitoring as a feature, and the backlink databases above track new and lost links too.
The research tool is the expensive one, and the spread is the widest: a database runs from $49 to $139 at entry level, while the cheapest paid email finder and outreach inbox are both $49. Prices across the four jobs run from $0 to $300, but the cheapest complete set is far nearer the bottom.
Four tools, or one agent? GenLink's agent finds relevant sites, writes a pitch for each one, sends from your own domain and follows up. Start with one agent free.
Three tool stacks at three budgets#
Each stack covers all four jobs. Prices are the monthly entry plans above.
- $0 a month: Google search operators for prospects, Hunter's free plan for 50 email lookups, your own inbox for sending, and Search Console's Links report for monitoring. Slow, but enough to learn what earns links in your niche.
- About $148 a month: Majestic Lite ($49.99) for prospects, Hunter Starter ($49) for emails, BuzzStream Starter ($49) for outreach, Search Console for monitoring.
- About $478 a month: Ahrefs Lite ($129), Hunter Starter ($49) and Pitchbox Pro ($300). Pitchbox's plans include link monitoring, so the fourth job is covered.
The jump from the middle stack to the top one is 3.2 times the money, and $300 of the top stack is Pitchbox alone. Its plans add a unified inbox, a CRM and link monitoring, so it pays off once one person's outreach no longer fits in a spreadsheet and a normal inbox.
Where one tool covers two jobs#
The cheapest way to cut a stack is to stop paying twice for the same job.
- Hunter sends as well as finds. Its plans include Sequences for cold email, and even the free plan connects one email account with 500 recipients per sequence. For a small campaign, it can cover contacts and sending.
- BuzzStream finds contacts. Starter includes contact info discovery and 30 prospecting searches, so a separate email finder may be redundant at low volume.
- Your database monitors links. If you already pay for Ahrefs, Semrush or Majestic, you have new and lost link tracking. Don't buy a separate checker.
- Semrush has its own outreach. Its Link Building Tool finds prospects and sends pitches inside the SEO plan.

How to choose link building tools in five steps#
Step 1: write down the tactic first. Broken link building needs a crawler and a backlink database. Resource page link building needs search operators and an email finder. Buy for the tactic, not the list.
Step 2: pick one database. Ahrefs and Hunter top the lists, but any of the four databases above will show you competitor links. Use the free trial or entry plan on your own competitors before you commit.
Step 3: check what the tools you already pay for can do. Hunter sends, BuzzStream finds contacts, and your database tracks links. Cross off any job already covered.
Step 4: price from the vendor's page. The lists we read quoted Respona at three different prices. Check the plan cap that matters for you: credits, contacts, users or searches.
Step 5: measure links per month, not features. After 60 days, count the referring domains you've gained from relevant sites. If a tool hasn't helped you earn one, cancel it.
The limits of this evidence#
We read nine lists and eight pricing pages over two days in October 2026, and prices change often. Our list sample came from a web search, not a verified Google results page. Entry prices hide caps on credits, users and projects, so the cheapest plan may not fit your volume. Five of the nine lists come from vendors with products to sell, and so does this one.
The link building tools worth paying for#
So which link building tools do you need? One per job, and fewer if a tool covers two. A backlink database to find prospects, an email finder, an outreach inbox, and Search Console to check the results. The cheapest paid version of each job costs about $49 a month. What decides your results is the pitch and how often you send it, not which tool sits at the top of a list. For the full playbook, read our link building guide.
Skip the stack. One GenLink agent runs the find, pitch, send and follow-up steps from a plain-English brief. Start free, then add agents at $50 a month each.
Frequently asked questions#
What are the best link building tools? The ones that cover the four jobs without overlap: a backlink database (Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz or Majestic), an email finder (Hunter), an outreach tool (BuzzStream or Pitchbox) and a link checker (Search Console). Ahrefs and Hunter each appear on 8 of the 9 lists we read.
How much do link building tools cost? Entry plans run from $49 to $139 a month for a backlink database, $49 for Hunter, and $49 to $300 for outreach software. A complete stack starts at about $148 a month.
Are there free link building tools? Yes. Google search operators, Search Console's Links report and Hunter's free plan cover all four jobs at low volume.
Do I need Ahrefs or Semrush for link building? You need one backlink database, not both. Moz and Majestic both have entry plans around $49, against $129 for Ahrefs and $139 for Semrush.
Can one tool do all of link building? Some come close. Semrush pairs a database with an outreach tool, Hunter finds emails and sends, and Pitchbox adds monitoring to outreach. You still write the pitches and work the replies.
Are best link building tools lists biased? Often. Five of the nine lists we read were published by a tool vendor, and each one put its own product first.
